General Dynamics Manufacturing Facilities in London, ON, Achieve ISO 50001 Energy Certification

March 5, 2021

London, Ontario – General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada announces that its main office building and central manufacturing facility in London, Ontario, are now ISO 50001 certified. This certification aligns with General Dynamics’ commitment to reduce its global environmental impact, decrease costs and remain competitive.

The ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard is recognized internationally and gives organizations a structured framework to manage energy performance, efficiency, use and consumption. In addition, it complements a management system, already achieved, for environmental matters that is compliant with the most current edition of ISO 14001.

General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada achieved the ISO 50001 certification requirements with financial assistance available through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). NRCan provides financial assistance of up to 50% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $40,000 per facility, to help fund industrial energy management projects.

“Improvements in energy efficiency will get us a third of the way to our Paris targets,” said the Honourable Seamus O’Regan Jr., Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “With today’s announcement, we’re lowering our emissions and moving Canada closer to net-zero by 2050.”

“We are very proud to have reached this milestone,” said John Ellison, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada. “Achieved by a group of approximately 20 companies in Canada, it ensures that we have the processes and systems in place to monitor and manage our energy efficiencies while supporting the Government of Canada’s initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are grateful to Natural Resources Canada for their financial assistance program.”

To meet the rigorous requirements of certification, General Dynamics addressed the organizational and technical actions required. This included conducting an energy review and establishing an energy baseline; establishing energy objectives and targets that are measurable and have timelines for achievement; establishing and implementing an action plan to achieve energy objectives; and continuing to check performance and monitor, document and report on all the above.
